Niege Borges, a Brazilian artist & illustrator, collaborated with us to create a wearable piece of art representing a collective of women coming together- ALL BODIES ONE VOICE, ONE VOICE ALL BODIES. A statement that says the same thing no matter how it’s read. We’re in this together.
1. What inspires your work?
I am inspired by women (that I know personally or not), fashion, the streets of New York and my hometown in Brazil and graphic design.
2. Why did you connect with this project?
I believe strongly that women have the right to decide on what to do with their bodies and with their lives. I feel privileged to live in New York, where abortion is legal but in Brazil that's not the case and I know too many stories of women that had to find ways to do it illegally. Abortion is also about women's health, banning abortion only puts their lives in danger.
3. How does your work reflect your body?
I love to explore body movements in my work, I love to draw people dancing or running. I like all the shapes that you can create while portraying the human body. Also each person's relationship with their body is in itself a really cool subject - when I draw a woman running that can have so many contexts and meaning, for example.
4. What does body care mean to you?
Body care to me is the ability of someone having access to health care and resources that help them to be healthy and live healthy lives.
5. How are you reclaiming the language of beauty?
I think that beauty is to feel good in your own body, to feel confident and to take care of yourself.
